Is the #school time too long or the #teaching too inefficient?
saradina-info-blog on 12.10.2024 um 07:26 (UTC) |
| When you read books about famous inventors and original thinkers or successful company founders, you notice that many of them spent very little time at school.
Especially in earlier centuries, many of these great thinkers left school at the age of fourteen. In addition, they often had very poor material equipment, which they often had to improve with their own hands.
What all of these great people had, however, was a deep interest in their own field, free curiosity and the courage to take practical action, as well as perseverance.
Today, the situation is completely different. School time is long, there are books, specially equipped work rooms, digital media such as computers, projectors, printers, etc.
Specialist teachers take over the so-called child-friendly lessons for the individual school subjects, the students also have digital equipment at home such as computers, smartphones, tablets, internet connections, and AI is increasingly being used.
But the performance of creativity does not seem to have increased with the material and pedagogical effort.
There are still illiterate people even in the materially well-equipped school system. Many students are simply uninterested and are only interested in their smartphones. Stamina and concentration are low and no one wants to get their hands dirty with any kind of craft work.
The inner attitude of the students and their parents towards school is that of consumers who want to be served and see themselves as the center of the institution.
Acquiring knowledge is seen as useless and serves only as a step on the career ladder to a well-paid job.
On the other hand, the long school time is offset from the educational point of view by a pseudo-supply of selected topic bites, with the topics changing quickly and there being little opportunity to recognize connections. The lessons are made more difficult by educational problems that parents do not resolve at home and the fact that teachers are seen as a kind of public servants and lackeys.
There is an ironic saying among photographers: "The better the camera, the worse the photo (in artistic terms)."
One could also say: "The higher the material expenditure and the more service in the school, the worse and more disinterested the students."
However, public school is not the soil in which original ideas, intellectual stamina and personal practical initiative emerge.

#AI pets: replacement for #living pets?
saradina-info-blog on 03.10.2024 um 08:13 (UTC) |
| Artificial intelligence is considered modern, progressive and convenient.
It is therefore understandable that parents want their children to share in this modern blessing.
What could be more natural than to introduce the children to the new technology in a playful way with toy pets that have artificial intelligence?
These artificial companions for children are fascinating because of their variety of possibilities: They can walk, "talk", meow, bark, dance and also learn commands on their own.
Another advantage is of an economic nature: while real pets need food, water, a place to sleep, incur veterinary costs and need to be kept busy, artificial pets are very modest, they are available on demand and can then easily be put in a corner.
But what sounds ideal brings problems with it.
The most important effect that keeping pets has for children - the development of a sense of responsibility and empathy - is not achieved with artificial pets based on artificial intelligence.
On the contrary.
Children who have not yet had contact with real live pets get a completely wrong picture of animals and living nature.
They are lulled by the constant availability and unconditional obedience of their robot friends.
The children also get used to the convenient fact that you can simply put the electronic playmate back in the corner when you get tired of playing.
They will never get used to the natural and unpredictable mood swings and whims of a living animal; these children always experience themselves as the dominant center.
Play and obedience at the touch of a button, that is the sober essence.
Artificial intelligence may be interesting and trendy. As a companion for children who want to discover the living world, it is not only unsuitable but also counterproductive.

#Sirius - a beautiful star in the night sky
saradina-info-blog on 20.09.2024 um 08:07 (UTC) |
| The amazing beautiful star Sirius is an enchanting phenomenon in the night sky. Especially the special glitter of Sirius is decorative. But where does this glitter come from?
This question is answered again and again: This is due to the atmosphere of the earth, which influences the radiation optically.
But there is a catch to this explanation, because the light of other stars is also influenced by the atmosphere of the Earth. But these stars don't glitter like Sirius...

#Olympics: between #selection and #elimination
saradina-info-blog on 11.08.2024 um 12:30 (UTC) |
| Again and again, the Olympics as a mega sporting event keep people in suspense. Further - higher - faster, only the best of the best win.
The presentation of the expensive Olympics conceals two subtexts behind the seemingly harmless entertainment façade:
1. It's about choosing the physically best with the best performance.
2. This selection automatically results in the elimination of the "unsuitable". It is the discreet message sent by the broadcaster (Olympic committee and media) to the general public (recipients).
But is physical performance the infallible guarantee of victory?
The fable of the hedgehog and the hare tells in a short story how the initially hopeless competition between the fast hare (who at the beginning despises the hedgehog because of his physical appearance - the short legs) takes an unexpected end due to a clever trick of the hedgehog.
The hedgehog with the short legs wins the running competition against the fast hare.
Victory in the competition obviously does not result exclusively from physical superiority.
But what does physical superiority mean?
The fastest runner of the Olympics is considerably slower than a cheetah, which accelerates from 0 to 100 in 3 seconds. The strongest athlete cannot compete with a gorilla in terms of physical strength.
Is it a sharp mind, as the hedgehog in the fable has shown, that automatically helps to win? You can't say that anymore today, when artificial intelligence is making more and more progress and may soon surpass its creators, the humans.
On the other hand, simple creatures like the lamprey have been leading a contemplative and unspectacular life for several million years - without extreme speed, great physical strength or excessive mental performance.
Darwin already said: "The fittest wins the fight for existence".
In our world, the term "fitness" has mainly degenerated into a synonym for physical performance. Darwin simply meant the optimal adaptation to an environmental situation by the term "fitness". Thus, Darwin's thought did not first arise from the observation of creatures that performed spectacular feats in the animal kingdom, but on finches, whose different beak shapes showed an adaptation to their environment.

No one is an island

| No one is an island.
Someone is always standing behind the curtains and watching everything.
The only exception. Someone is totally impoverished and sitting on the street. This person is guaranteed not to be seen by anyone.
